I have been installing floors for a long time. Long enough to say this with confidence. I have installed everything. Carpet, tile, hardwood, laminate, vinyl, concrete overlays. All of it.
And after all these years and all these homes, I will say it plainly.
I hate carpet. I do.
That does not mean carpet never has a place. It means that as someone who sees flooring before, during, and years after installation, carpet consistently causes more problems than it solves.
I personally prefer hard surface floors like LVP and hardwood. Here is why.
1. Carpet Holds Odors and Allergens
Carpet is essentially a sponge you walk on every day.
It traps pet odors, food smells, smoke, dust, pollen, and dander. Even when carpet looks clean on the surface, those particles settle deep into the fibers and padding. I have pulled up carpet that looked fine but smelled terrible underneath.
Once odors reach the pad or subfloor, cleaning products do not fix the problem.
Hard surface floors clean completely. When they are clean, they are actually clean.
2. Carpet Stains Easily and Permanently
Spills happen. Life happens.
Carpet does not forgive coffee, wine, kids, makeup, grease, or mystery spills. Spot cleaning may help at first, but stains often resurface later.
I have replaced carpet that was less than two years old because one bad spill ruined an entire room.
With LVP or hardwood, spills wipe up quickly without panic, discoloration, or replacement.
3. Carpet Has a Short Life Span
Even high quality carpet shows wear fast.
Traffic lanes appear. Fibers flatten. Texture disappears. Color fades unevenly. Hallways, stairs, and living rooms look tired long before homeowners expect them to.
Most carpet realistically lasts five to ten years before it needs replacement.
LVP and hardwood commonly last twenty years or more with basic care.
From a long term value standpoint, carpet loses.
4. Carpet Is Hard to Truly Clean
Vacuuming helps. Steam cleaning helps. Neither restores carpet to new condition.
Moisture from deep cleaning can push stains deeper into the pad and activate odors that never fully leave. In some cases, moisture creates mold issues beneath the surface.
Once the padding is compromised, the carpet is finished.
Hard surface flooring does not hide problems. You see dirt and you remove dirt.
5. Pets and Carpet Do Not Get Along
I love pets. Carpet does not.
I constantly see pet urine soaking through to padding, scratching and pulling seams, hair embedded beyond vacuum reach, and odors that never fully disappear.
Pet damage is one of the most common reasons people replace carpet far earlier than planned.
Luxury vinyl plank is waterproof. Hardwood can be repaired. Carpet absorbs and remembers
.So Why Do People Still Choose Carpet
Comfort. Warmth. Familiarity.
And for some bedrooms, carpet can still make sense.
But modern luxury vinyl plank and updated hard surface flooring now offer comfort underfoot, realistic wood looks, better hygiene, longer life, and far easier maintenance.
That is why as a professional installer, I lean strongly toward hard surfaces.
